A lovely warm morning saw 8 participants arrive at Slyne Lodge for Peter’s lakes Run.
Just after 10:30 we set off up to Carnforth where we branched left towards Silverdale and Warton.
At this point Richard thought we had lost Chris so he tore off up the front to warn Peter and slow the group, but no problem, Chris was just stuck behind some slow moving traffic. On then to Warton Village and then on through the Yealand villages to Slackhead and Beetham. Peter found an open private road here and we passed through the stately home garden of Dallam Towers overlooking the river Bella. A wonderful site to have your home on.
We then followed the river into Milnthorpe and stopped in the market square for a refreshment break in the blazing sunshine.
After a break we returned back through Milnthorpe, followed the river but then turned right along the marsh road towards Leasgill. We eventually arrived at Levens where we joined the A590 for a bit and then turned off in to Lindale. From here on there was a lot of magic and roads and bumps and corners and hills but the outcome was that we arrived at the east side road of Lake Coniston just below High Nibthwaite. We followed the lake road round to coniston village enjoying the views across the lake as we went and on arrival in Coniston we stopped at the Crown Inn for lunch.
The return journey started off towards Hawkshead hill and shortly after setting of we had a bit of a “Do” with a bus and some stopped cars on a steep hill and blind bend. No problems, it all got sorted out and we carried on just a bit more aware of how narrow these roads are.
After Hawkshead we turned south along the side of Esthwaite Water and on down to Lakeside and Newby Bridge. To avoid some of the boring A590 we turned off at High Newton and went through Witherslack and Millside before getting back on the A590 just before the Levens turn off. The roads here were a severe test on our suspension and one wonders how long it will be before the roads will become dangerous.
So from here we went back to Milnthorpe and stopped again in the market square where it was now truly tropical. After a comfort break we set off down the A6 and turned off to go through Nether Kellett to avoid riding through Carnforth Arriving back on the A6 we went a mile south and turned off to get to Peter’s house in Morecambe. Here Jane plied us with pots of tea and some super sandwiches which she had made for us along with some smashing cake.
After an hour we all thanked Peter and Jane for their efforts and set off back home. A quick stop for fuel at Caton and then we stopped at Quernmore where we went our separate ways after a long but very enjoyable day riding
Thanks very much to Peter for the organisation and navigation and to Jane for the lovely grub.
I clocked 161 miles.
Richard
