The Lakes Run 8th August
Two riders (Mic and I) turned up at the Auction Eats for the lakes run. Not surprising there were only two of us as it is holiday season and John was on his modern bike and went straight to Slyne on the Motorway instead of fighting the traffic in Preston and Lancaster.
We had an uneventful ride to Slyne via Lancaster where we arrived on time at 10:30. A surprise rider was there to meet us, Chris M. had ridden all the way over from Millom to join us and to test whether his modified foot could stand up to riding a long distance! Well done Chris.
So with Peter leading Chris M, Chris B, John, Mic and I set off up to Milnthorpe for a short rest. Then to Levens and Grange where we turned off and rode through Cartmel, where the preparations for the racing were beginning. Then over High Brow Edge to Backbarrow. We crossed the A590 and turned left for Finsthwaite and then followed the lakeside road through Cunsey to Joeys Cafe at Claife. We parked up here and had lunch then walked up the hill to the Victorian viewpoint. The weather was lovely and the view great. Another visitor there offered to take our photograph which we gladly accepted and after a short while we walked back to the bikes. At this point Chris would be heading in the wrong direction if he took the ferry so he said his goodbyes and went back to Newby Bridge and then home to Millom. Our group of five set off for Ferry Nab via the Windermere Ferry. A lovely crossing and then on to Brigsteer and the A6 heading home. At Milnthorpe we turned right along Sandside and we noticed the ship Inn has closed. Yet another pub gone. Then a left turn for Storth, Beetham and Silverdale where we stopped off at The Woodlands Pub for a rest and refreshments.
After the rest we set off to Leighton Moss and took the crag road down to Warton and back to Carnforth where we crossed the A6 and rode towards Over Kellet but turned right to Nether Kellet to get to the Crook o’ Lune picnic site where Chris and Peter left us two remaining riders to travel back to Garstang via Quernmore. We had a good ride back to Garstang and I peeled off at Churchtown and arrived home at around 5:15pm after riding about 140 miles for the day.
A great run with lovely weather and a very pleasant route thanks to Peter.
