A few notes to cover the November events in the club calendar.

First the visit to the Manchester Museum of Science and Technology on the 7th.

Six members turned up at the Bowling Green and we all piled into Richards Landrover. A little cramped for the gallant pair who took position on the “Kiddie” seats in the cargo area but for the shortish journey neither occupant suffered any serious injury!

The journey went well considering the torrential rain we encountered on the motorway with spray and rain bringing the travelling speed down to 30mph at times. But we arrived in bright sunshine and had the good fortune to find a parking space just over the road from the museum. Inside we went our separate ways through the halls of history that are the spinning, weaving and industrial history of the north west. Bob found a historic exhibit which he was closely acquainted with. No, not an 1850’s spinning jenny but a 1960’s NORWEB gas turbine powered standby generator which he had used in his work with the company. A picture was duly taken for posterity!

A disappointment of the day was that the power hall was closed for maintenance so we didn’t get to see the steam and stationary engines and somehow I missed the steam locomotives.

Back to the café for some leg rest and a bite to eat and then on to the Aviation and Vehicle hall.

Some very interesting exhibits are in here, from the Shackleton Coastal Command aircraft to the model “T” Ford. I didn’t even know that these Ford Cars were made in the UK between 1915 and 1928 let alone made in Manchester. You learn something new every day.

Then as the time approached 4pm we gathered at the entrance for our departure. No one got lost and after a false start and some quick reference to the sat nav we made it out of Manchester in weather similar to our inward journey but without serious holdups we arrived back at the Bowling Green at about 5pm. Everyone seemed to have enjoyed the day, I certainly did.

Next in the calendar was the Carvery Night at the Bowling Green where about 24 members and partners turned up for what was a very nice gathering and meal. We occupied the lower dining area and a nice atmosphere was generated with everyone chatting together and having a few drinks.

To those who missed the event I can only say what a shame, you missed out on a smashing evening.

Don’t forget, the last club night of the year is 2nd December. I hope to see you all there.
