Richard’s Fylde and Wyre Run 28 May 2025

It was a slightly wet morning as I left home in Lytham and by the time I arrived at Treales it was raining hard so I stopped and donned my waterproof top. At Auction Eats 5 riders were already assembled and having breakfast.  A sixth rider arrived and soon after it was leaving time so with seven in the group and the rain stopped we set off on Richard’s Fylde and Wyre run. I had done a recce in the past week and found one road closed so I changed the route a little and took the group up to Brock Mill and then back to Newsham on the A6, turned left and after half a mile turned right into Station Lane to drive to The Plough at Eaves and then on to St Michaels. Here we crossed the river Wyre and turned left to follow the river as far as Whin Lane End and then up Turkey Street to Sower Carr and crossed the A588 to take the back lanes round Stalmine to get to Preesall. A left turn here to Knott End where the plan was to have lunch at the Cafe by the slipway. Oh Dear, I didn’t check that the cafe was open on my Recce and had I done so I would have known it has closed down. A couple of the riders hadn’t brought lunch with them so one went back to the Dutton Arms where he was served refreshments and the other bought a meal deal at a local shop so at least we all had lunch. By now the sun had come out and it was quite pleasant sitting on the benches watching the Fleetwood Ferry coming and going, crossing the river on a high tide. Shortly after 1pm we set off  on the final leg of the ride which took us along the sea wall road to the amenity area on the A588 and then on to Cockerham. One rider left us here to return home to Morecambe and the remainder followed me to Bay Horse and Dolphinholme to pass by a member’s house to say hello and then through the quaint little settlement of Lower Dolphinholme to get to the Trough Road and on towards Scorton. I took the scenic route to Scorton from Long Lane up through the ford on Higher Lane and then right down the lane that runs through Nicky Nook and down to the Priory Cafe at Scorton. Here we parked up, went into the Cafe and ordered our drinks and cakes which were brought to us on the outside tables by the pleasant staff member who had served us. We sat and chatted in the warm sunshine for a while and finally we said our goodbyes and headed for our various homes. I must say the roads on this route are getting worse and worse with each passing year and I think they actually surpassed the terrible road conditions we faced on Tony’s run in South Ribble and West Lancs 3 weeks ago! Come on Lancashire Highways department get some proper resurfacing done on the unclassified roads instead of just roughly filling the holes with tarmac!!

Regardless of the road conditions encountered everyone seemed to enjoy the run and the weather was in fact very kind to us.
