2024 Rideout Report
Ride to Hesket Newmarket. Tuesday 25th June
Seven riders met at Auction Eats for 10:30. Bob, Tony, Alan, Lee, Phil, Mick, John.
Bob led the main group of riders to Devils Bridge at Kirkby Lonsdale on a lovely hot summers day, scenery beautiful. Two riders got delayed from leaving Auction Eats and Lee returned to pick up the delayed riders. Lee then led them to Devils Bridge to meet Trevor.
So now all the riders were reunited. Trevor informed us that Chris was to meet us at Hesket Newmarket as he was taking his bike up in his van.
It was a great ride up but we had road diversions near Orton where we stopped for lunch.
Due to the road closures Bob led us on via Appleby and to the services at Penrith for fuel then on to Hesket Newmarket where we arrived at 15:50. Lovely boarding house and a nice meal at the pub 20 yards away. What’s not to like? Hesket Newmarket is the place Eddie Stobart started his transport business in the 40’s. Covered about 120 miles in all.
In the The Old Crown for the 7:15 meal which was excellent.
Bobs Run. Wednesday 26th June
Another beautiful morning dawned and after full English Breakfast at Denton House we started the ride at 10:30 with 10 riders heading towards Wigton and Kirkbride to our favourite lay-by stop overlooking the Solway Firth. It’s was a beautiful hot day so we rested for a while.
Then on to Silloth. Here we stopped for lunch and had a look around the attractive little town with a very wide cobbled street running the full length. Probably not bike friendly in the wet and pretty bumpy at anytime!
After lunch we set off for Maryport along the coast road and stopped at the docks for an ice cream at the Wharfe Cafe where home made ice cream is served.
On our return ride we stopped for fuel and then had the misfortune of having to follow the roadworks vehicles adding tar and stones to the road and then taking the diversions for road closures etc
We got back at 17:00 after a good ride and we thanked Bob for his planning and for leading the ride.
Our meal at the Old Crown was booked for 7:00pm and we all went in for the evening. Covered about 85 miles altogether.
Peter’s Run. Thursday 27th June
Third day into our ride out. Unfortunately John wasn’t able to make the ride due to misfiring problems with his bike.
Nine riders left Denton House B&B about 10:40 and we set off for Ambleside passing Ullswater on our left and over Kirkstone Pass we turned onto Rydall Road and dropped down into Ambleside. What a ride! the lakes never disappoints it’s such a lovely part of England. Had a coffee and set off for Broughton in Furness where we had lunch. Next stop was Dale Garth on the Ravenglass-Eskdale railway and had a look around the steam Locomotive beautifully built in York in 1966 and well maintained. Set off then for Cockermouth. Somehow we managed to lose Bob after some roadworks and traffic lights. Fuelled up in Cockermouth and got back to Hesket Newmarket about 17.00 and 104 miles later. Bob turned up about 20 minutes later, safe and sound.
John’s Run Friday 28th June
Set off for 10:30 with ten riders and one cylinder short to Brampton to visit the Solway Aviation Museum. The weather was cloudy, windy and quite cool. The display at the Museum is very interesting, particularly for aviation enthusiasts, however the military aircraft outside seemed to have more of a draw for the AMOC Members and in particular the Vulcan Bomber. The museum fee included a look inside the Vulcan where we were kept informed and entertained by Dougie of Spiney Norman and Bangers and Cash fame. Well worth the visit.
Unfortunately we had a mix up with setting off from the museum which caused two of us to go the wrong way but managed to meet up again and get on our way along the highways and byways of Cumbria and Northumberland. Passed Hadrians wall and up over Hartside Pike which seemed to go up for ever until it started going down forever. Dropped down into Alston and fuelled up ready for the ride home tomorrow. Then a ride down via the very bent hairpin bend to Melmerby and back to Denton House. About 113 miles covered for the day.
Richard H and Dave Y drove up from Lytham just to have the meal with us as both were unable to join the rideout this year. So we finished off with a lovely meal at the Old Crown again.
Saturday 29th June
The ride home was led by Bob but it was wet and cold, Lee had some magneto issues but we all got home safe and sound.
Again we had a great week let hope for another one in 2025.
