Richard’s Fylde and Wyre run 29th May 2024
A chilly dull day greeted 6 riders at the Cafe for the start of the run. It had been a very wet night and many roads were covered in water. John M had ridden over from Sedbergh through very wet conditions to get to the start but was keen to continue. Bob had come from High Bentham where he had been caravanning. The Auction Eats Cafe is in Wyre District and we set off round the back lanes to Billsborrow and took the road to Myerscough. Just after Owd Nells we turned off down Moss Lane to get to Lewth. There were many deep puddles along the road and some inconsiderate drivers splashing through them! At Lewth, where we were now in Fylde Borough, we joined the Inskip road where the roads had dried up a bit and the sky lightened. Taking the left turn at the Derby Arms we headed for Wharles and turned right here to pass through Roseacre to get to Elswick. Now the roads were dry and we proceeded through Thistleton to the A585 Fleetwood road and turned left down to Esprick where a right turn took us into Greenhalgh and the newly re surfaced section of Back Lane to Weeton. A right turn here took us past Weeton Camp and on to Singleton Village. We crossed the Old Garstang Road where there were cones a’plenty. (I think they may be making a roundabout here) and down to Skipool where we turned right to The Wyre Estuary Country Park overlooking the river Wyre for a stop for refreshments. We are now back in Wyre District. After resting we retraced our steps back to Shard Bridge and crossed the river to head for Out Rawcliffe a little detour here took us to Lancaster Road where we turned left up to Stakepool. At Stakepool it started to rain a little so I stopped and checked if anyone wanted to put waterproofs on. No one did so we carried on to Winmarleigh and joined the Cockerham road. Just along this road I noticed the that the Patten Arms pub seems to be open again after being closed for a couple of years. At Wallings Ice Cream Factory we entered Lancaster District and then turned right at Cockerham to Glasson Dock.
There was still a little light rain falling as we took our lunch break but nothing too serious. The Victoria Inn at Glasson looks in a sorry state now as it has been closed for 5 years. It is Grade 2 Listed and is up for sale for £299,000 but be aware previous plans to open it again have been refused for some reason.
The rain eased as we left Glasson and headed off to Galgate and at 5 lane ends Bob and John M left us to go their way home and the remaining four travelled to Oakenclough , back in Wyre District again, and down to Brock on the A6. Mick and John I left us at Bilsborrow and Alan and I went to the cafe at the Myerscough Cafe for a drink. It was lovely to get in somewhere warm and dry and we stayed about half an hour chatting before heading back to Kirkham where I waved Alan Goodbye. It was a good run but it could have been better with more sun and bit more warmth but that is 2024 for you!
