We took the train from Ormskirk with the ‘Saveaway’ ticket. This gives you extended travel for an extra 20p. Some chose to see the Western Approaches wartime control centre near the Pierhead. The Museum is situated at the Albert Dock, a very picturesque setting. We met up in the foyer of the museum before wandering around the vast array of exhibits. It’s a real warren to navigate around and we probably saw about a quarter of it before the café beckoned us in. After refreshments we wandered along the river to the Pierhead to get our ferry tickets. We boarded the ferry and then realized just how bracing the wind was! The commentary about the various landmarks was interesting and the new buildings along the famous waterfront were a bit surprising. We were soon turning across the river and taking the full force of the wind up the river. Then along the far side we sailed past the massive air vents for the new tunnel, then the monumental Art Deco building which is the air vent for the old tunnel.

We got off the ferry at Woodside, Birkenhead and walked past the old tram which was running that day. Onto the train and we were soon under the river and  back at Central where we had to change for the Northern line. Laurie got off at Maghull and the rest returned to Ormskirk. Thanks Tony for organizing a good day out.
