RIP “Sailor” Steve Pickard
On 23rd June our member Steve Pickard passed away after a very short illness.
Steve had been a member of the club for many years and rode with us on many rides, rallies and weeks away. An avid collector of bikes, cars and any interesting modes of transport, he was always to be seen at the autojumbles negotiating for obscure parts. We remember him as a cheerful and very interesting chap. His exploits sailing the world’s oceans and writing books on the subject are well regarded in sailing circles. Our runs over to Blundell Sands Sailing Club, where Steve had been the Commodore, were organised by him when the Club hosted their RNLI benefit days. I remember many sunny afternoons talking boats and bikes with him at the club.
Steve was a very positive thinker and setting out on a ride on an old machine with little knowledge of its history was natural to him. Any misfortune or breakdown was taken in his stride and the ride completed with an ingenious solution thought up on the hoof.
Many of the riders have tales to tell of Steve and his exploits and I am sure his family will look back on his life with all the incidents and activities he undertook with great fondness.
So now it is goodbye to “Sailor” Steve after a life well lived.
May you have fair winds and smooth roads as you take your final journey.
We will all miss you Steve.
