Tony’s Mid Week Run (or the North West Section goes to Church!)

8 members met at CRFC on a dull but warm day. Tony led us away but Dave’s Model 20 cut out after starting first kick. It only took a few minutes to restart but we couldn’t catch up with the leaders. Mick was waiting on the motorway bridge and Mike was on the next corner but ‘Oh dear’ (or words to that effect) there was no-one on the next. Mike led on for a few minutes before Dave took over as he knew where the coffee stop was (but not Tony’s route there!)

It was a little confusing when we arrived at the Lakeside Cafe as it was only signed as a Church on the front! We went through and up the stairs and it opens into a very nice cafe which overlooks the Marine Lake. It seems to be Southport’s best kept secret! After about 10 minutes Tony, Rob and John S. arrived and refreshments were ordered and consumed at leisure.

Eventually Tony led us off along the coast road towards Ainsdale and across the moss roads to Downholland where we crossed over the canal at ‘The Ship’ (where the NW section held it’s very first proper meeting about 47 years ago) and carried on to Clieves Hills. At the top we had a lovely view of West Lancashire. When we arrived at the canal-side pub ‘The Heatons bridge’ the clouds were beginning to darken a little. After sampling the beer etc Dave turned for home and Tony led the others back towards CRFC. It was just starting to spit with rain by then so I hope everyone got home dry.

Thanks Tony for a good run.
