Nine members turned up at the club on a fine morning for Tony’s run. The weather was not as hot as recent days had been so we were more than happy with the weather. At the appointed hour he led us out through Grimshaw Green and Mawdsley to Rufford where we crossed the A59 and skirted the animal farm and wildfowl wetland to get to Heatons Bridge and Scarisbrick. From here we passed through the posh end of Southport to get to the Marine Drive where we headed South West, driving along the sea shore and through the sand dunes of Birkdale and Ainsdale to arrive at the Cosy Cafe at Ainsdale Beach. The best laid plans always go wrong and this was no exception as the cafe (which Tony had visited on Monday to check it would be open) was closed! Oh well, there are plenty more hostelries about so we set off for the planned stop at the Scotch Piper at Lydiate.
This was open and we were given a warm welcome by the landlord and served their best crisps and beverages. Lawrie was here to meet us, being a local to to the area, and we had a natter to him over crisps drinks and sandwiches.
We then took our leave and headed to Aughton and skirted Skelmersdale to bring us to Hoscar and our finishing stop at the Farmers Arms at Bispham Green. A few more sandwiches and drinks were consumed in the sunshine outside the pub where we thanked Tony for the guided tour of the area before all making our separate ways home.
It might be flat but it is nice to see such rural parts of Lancashire from a bike even if LCC seems to have run out of money to fill the holes!
Thanks Tony
Richard
