Peter’s Lakes Run 9th August 2025
An early start for this run on a cloudy day. 3 riders arrived at Auction Eats and shortly after we got a phone call from Alan, he had a breakdown and with Lee would go home and get his van to rescue the bike then go back, get his other bike and meet us at Slyne Lodge. Wow What a start!
Off we went up the A6 through Lancaster to arrive at Slyne at 10:30 where Peter was waiting.
We waited for about 45 Minutes and Lee and Alan turned up so not too much of a delay. However Alan’s front brake was binding and becoming intermittent but after it cooled off it seemed OK. Then, Just as we started to go, we noticed Bob’s back tyre was flat. Luckily he had an aerosol puncture fixer can with him so it didn’t take long to get us back on the road. However, about 3 miles up the road at Bolton Le Sands the tube gave up and we stopped in the centre of the village and commenced to take the tyre off to fit another tube. Some of us were hungry and Lee rode back to a local pie shop to buy some hot pies and soon after his return the tube was fitted, pumped up and we were ready to set off again.
We drove through Nether Kellet and on to Over Kellet and up to Tewitfield and Burton In Kendal. At Stainton we took a scenic detour up a very narrow lane with a lawn down the middle, we also caused havoc with some horse riders but at the end of the lane Peter decided that his TomTom was unreliable, or set to find winding roads, so we turned round and caused havoc with the horses again!
Back at Stainton we seemed to be on the proper track up to Natland, through Kendal and up to Stavely where we stopped at Wilf’s cafe for Drinks and cakes. From here we rode up the A591 to Ings, turned off to Troutbeck and down to meet the A591 at Low Wood Bay. Here we rode into busy Waterhead, not too much traffic but we needed to filter a bit here and there to keep moving. From Waterhead we rode on to Skelwith Bridge up to Elterwater where we stopped at the Britannia Inn and rested under the shade of the trees after a very polite parking attendant pointed us to the correct place to park, not on the double yellow lines in front of a no parking sign!
From Elterwater we rode down to Coniston town and took the road down the east of the lake. A lovely ride this, past Brantwood with nice views across the lake. At Penny Bridge we joined the A590 and headed back to Newby Bridge and Levens. Just after Carnforth we lost Lee and Alan so we stopped and I went back to find them. Alan’s front brake had failed again and to avoid the problem that seemed to be brought on by constant use in traffic they decided to join the motorway and ride steadily back to Blackpool unfortunately missing out on Peter’s tea on the lawn to end the ride.
Jane had prepared some nice sandwiches and cakes and I must say we were all ready for some refreshments as it was now 6:30.
After a good natter and polishing off a lot of the food we took our leave but due to our uncertainty of which way we should take out of Morecambe, Peter saddled up again and led us out to the A6 at the Royal Lancashire Infirmary from where we all rode home.
A lovely ride out in good weather with lots of incidents overcome, that’s why riding in a club group is good, lots of help and willing hands.
Thanks Peter and Jane for all the effort put in to make the day a good one.
