Morecambe Vintage Weekend

Saturday 3rd September was overcast but warm and 5 Riders arrived at Auction Eats for the run. Some had arrived early and took advantage of a breakfast before setting off.

Just after 10:30 we set off through Garstang and up the A6 to Bay Horse where we took the usual route up to Caton and on to Bull Beck Picnic Site where Peter and our leaders Chris and Trevor were waiting. At 11:30 we set off back through Caton and down through Crook o’ Lune to turn right and ride through Halton Park. After joining the Kirkby Lonsdale road we soon turned off right to Aughton and left towards Gressingham. A left here took us back to the Kirkby Lonsdale road where we turned right to Arkholme. Straight on here to Whittington where we turned left to Hutton Roof and Dalton. At Borwick we turned south to go through Over Kellet and Nether Kellet where we headed across to Bolton Le Sands and entered Morecambe from Hest Bank.

It was very busy along the promenade with many folks in period (1950’s) costume and when we eventually reached the road closed barrier before the Midland Hotel Trevor flashed his credentials and we were led to our display point right outside the station and opposite the Midland Hotel.

There was an immediate gathering of the crowds and many shouts of “I used to ride one of those”. After a while we left the bikes to go to see the vintage car exhibits in the Midland car park where there were a fine selection of Morris Minors and British and American cars from the 40’s 50’s and 60’s

Bob and Tony were told off when they touched a Jensen Interceptor to see if it was a replica!

An enterprising guy had a few hand made pedal cycles on display, one dressed up to look like a Harley WLA! There was an electric powered Wellbike and a superb Moto Rumi Formichino next to an AJS combination in very good order.

Some then took a walk round the market or down to the Eric Morecambe statue past the fairground and generally mingled with the crowds. John caught the eye of some vintage ladies and spent quite a while in conversation with them (I think he knew them from way back!)

So at round 3:45pm after the group returned from exploring we saddled up and got Trevor to lead us out of Morecambe along the now gridlocked roads as the crowds were all trying to get out before the rush!  At Caton he waved us goodbye and we traveled back to Auction Eats via Oakenclough at which point we had a rest and a cuppa, (Tony also had a big chocolate cake)

From here we all departed for home after a very pleasant ride and day out.

Thanks must go to Trevor and Chris for the organisation and route plan.
